Batch 2024
The Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAPs) guide Jesuit ministries worldwide, focusing on four key areas: promoting spiritual discernment and the Spiritual Exercises, walking with the excluded and advocating for justice, journeying with youth to build a hopeful future, and caring for our common home through ecological conversion. These preferences ensure Jesuits address contemporary global challenges with compassion and commitment to faith and justice.
“The whole process of formation through its various stages from Novitiate to Tertianship should favour integration into the apostolic body of the Society, so that it prepares our young men to fulfil the mission and perform the ministries which the Society may wish to assign to them.” (Constitutions)
As it is recommended in the Constitutions, the weekly ministry is part and parcel of our Jesuit life in Ashakiran. Our brothers engage in various apostolates apart from their studies. We eagerly wait for the weekend, to go out and help those in need.
Encounter with the Elders
There are many old age homes in and around Mangalore city. Our brothers visit four of them, namely, Anne’s Home for the Aged - Naguri, Paschim Rehab - Nehrunagar, Little Sisters of the Poor – Maroli, and Prashanth Nivas - Jeppu. We give them haircut, trim their beard and listen to their wisdom.
Being one with Children
Visiting child-care centres or children’s homes is another side of our weekly apostolate. Aloysian Boys’ Home – Nehru Nagar, White Doves – Kulshekar, and Prashanth Nivas – Jeppu, are the three main places we render our service to the most vulnerable. We conduct games, teach English and, more importantly, motivate them to become successful human beings. After all, we too are inheriting a childlike attitude which is gradually leading us to enter into the Kingdom of God.

Accompanying the Differently Abled
Places like White Doves -Kulshekar is a home for many differently abled men and women. This ministry is one of the most challenging apostolates. Our brothers try their best to keep them happy and smiling by conducting very simple activities every Saturday.
Walking with the Migrants
This initiative was taken up by our community in keeping with the Universal Apostolic Preferences of the Society of Jesus. Some of our brothers visit the Hoigebazar fishery community where there are many migrants from Tamil Nadu. We try to empower this community in collaboration with the School of Social Work, Roshini Nilaya.. We teach children the basic values of life and the English Language. By doing so, we are trying to empower them, especially the women and the vulnerable children.

Ever since the inception of the Society of Jesus, our founding Father
St. Ignatius of Loyola had a special care and concern for the youth.
One of the four Apostolic Preferences of the Society is Accompanying the Youth. Youth is the prime time for making important and meaningful decisions in life.
Ashakiran is a home which instils a “ray of hope”, for all of us. We are 39 Jesuit Scholastics entrusted with the mission to bear witness of Jesus Christ amidst our classmates and friends who are in the prime of their youth.
Once Martin Luther King JR said , “A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus, but a moulder of consensus”. we Scholastics are called to be genuine leaders to mould young minds, to root out misconceptions about religion and to instil moral values and Faith in God.
By doing so, the young people we interact with, will become smart, discerning, knowledgeable and committed to a dignified (drug free) life with inner freedom.
We strongly believe that “life can only be understood backwards but it must be lived forward”, This is a beautiful reflection by the profound and prolific writer, Soren Kierkegaard.
It is not that young people are useless but that they are used less. Our committed service to our young brothers and sisters will be a great help to them. we can help them through sharing our life experiences to move ahead with courage and trust.
Thus we will all become instruments in God’s hands, helping others to be loved, saved, and forgiven.
JOURNYING WITH THE YOUTH

Our Animal Kingdom
"Our World is a masterpiece and God is the Architect.".
He loves all His creation and still continues to love us through His creatures such as our fellow beings, animals, birds and flowers etc. Each creature has its own role to play. In this context, God has gifted our Ashakiran family with representatives from the animal and bird kingdoms.
They are our three ferocious-looking yet loving dogs, colourful lovebirds and an aquarium. Occasionally snakes too visit our campus. We have heard this saying, 'The measure you give the measure you receive'. We show our love, care and concern towards these creatures. In return, they have mesmarized us with their faithfulness and love towards us.
Blacky, Jack and Jill are guarding us tremendously by being our night watchkeepers. They do not even allow a mosquito to enter our compound. Similarly the lovebirds refresh our mind and body through their melodious chirping. At the same time, the aquarium too helps us to praise the Almighty for His marvelous creation.
We also have occassional visitors like Squirrels, Bulbuls, Sunbirds, Oriental robin, woodpecker, kingfisher etc. Some choose to make a home, some sing lovely songs to us and others come to taste our delicious fruits.
Overall, the dogs, birds and an aquairium make us glorify the Almighty God.

Our Physical Fitness
It is said, "You don't stop playing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop playing".
In our Ashakiran community, brothers become young, energetic and focused because of the daily regular exercises like playing basketball, volleyball, table tennis, Badminton etc for around one and a half hour everyday.
Along with the academic, spiritual, apostolic and community activities, physical activities also play an important role in the growth of a Jesuit in formation.
Everyone has various opportunities to have a sound mind in a sound body. Physical exercise can be anything like taking a walk, jogging, cycling, going into the gym, doing some manual work, playing games, etc .
We are blessed to have some space around us in the middle of the city, where we move around and also play games everyday.

A game is something like a labour. The physical structure of our body remains naturally fit and energetic. We do not have to do anything artificial to keep fit.By taking physical exercises, not only does our body stay fit, but also our mind. By engaging in regular exercise, one's stress, anxiety, depression, anger, etc., are relieved.
It helps us to have a positive mind and sound health. One's self-image and self-confidence are born within. One is focused in the work and able to concentrate on the studies. All the more, one's performance in any work is more fruitful. Thus physical exercise is as important as reading a book .
